At the aircraft maintenance hangar
How an airline uses Mela to simplify maintenance checks and fix issues more efficiently
"By using Mela, teams are more aligned, issues are solved faster and management is satisfied, too: less time spent on inspections and maintenance means more time for the airplanes to fly - and more revenue for the airline."
Dan, a maintenance supervisor at a European airline with more than 80 aircraft, knows that getting the work done right first time is paramount. Being in charge of aircraft maintenance and safety, Dan explained that there are several checks to conduct; any discrepancy needs to be addressed promptly: “we have to be meticulous”, he added. “There may not be a second chance.”
“During each inspection we have to go through a set of procedures to ensure the airplane is airworthy”, Dan explained. As is often the case with high-risk industries there are several standard checklists to clear and it is crucial not to skip any step. “It’s a big problem when we find unexpected issues”, Dan said. “Procedures tell me what I should do, but they are a static script in a changing world. They don’t help when reality diverges from the textbook, which is often the case.”
Dan and his team used to document any issues they encountered on paper. Then, back at the office, they had to write their findings on a report, send it to management for approval and, once cleared, return to the field hangar to fix the issues. Significant time was wasted reporting and documenting the results of an inspection or maintenancecheck.
“Ever since we started using Mela, things have improved dramatically. Mela is such a useful tool to keep everybody informed about our findings”, Dan explained. On the field, Dan and his team now collect pictures and voice messages. Since they create these reports in a shared Mela group which updates all parties involved, Dan can get immediate clearance for action. “We use Mela at every inspection and maintenance check, even when everything is fine. It is a simple tool to document the current status, retrieve information and share it with everyone”, Dan added. “It is a fantastic complement to our processes that speeds things up and increases our efficiency.”
Dan noticed that by using Mela, teams are more aligned, issues are solved faster and management is satisfied, too: less time spent on inspections and maintenance means more time for the airplanes to fly - and more revenue for the airline.
After a productive day at work, Dan relaxed and said “Mela gives us confidence that everything is done correctly and that all parties are informed and work collaboratively.”
